Artistic Statement
As a dancer, I feel my most authentic when I feel a sense of joy. I have worked hard my past four years of college trying to find out who I am as a dancer, and what I realized is that my body knows what is right for me. I love the classics. I love old school jazz, ballet, and broadway style tap and jazz. I also am now heavily influenced by my studies in college: contemporary, contact improvisation, Afro-Cuban, and somatic practices.
As a choreographer, I like to follow my gut and try every idea that pops in my head. I have strong morals and strong leadership qualities. I value my ideas and beliefs and like to follow what my gut and heart is telling me to do. Although I honor my leadership qualities, I also love working with the dancers in the piece and having them bring their own ideas and affinities into the space.
As a teacher, I am positive, passionate, compassionate, and understanding. I have a strong ability to understand children and care for them in the way they need. I pride myself on my ability to take control of the classroom through that care and understanding of my students. I am a very empathetic person and have a “childlike” outlook on life so this is why I truly understand children and teenagers and how they are feeling. I bring fun and joy to the classroom because of this “childlike” outlook I have. What I mean by this is that children are optimistic, they are full of hope, wonderment, love, and live unfiltered. This is how I live and will continue to live no matter how old I get or how hard life gets. Although I value joy, I also value implementing a strong work ethic within my students. My father always stressed the importance of working hard and performing to your best ability in all aspects of life, and I plan to pass this on to my students.
